Friday Art...

So I have decided to have Friday Art! I am an Art History major and I LOVE learning about the historical aspects of art...specially Italian Renaissance. So be prepared for a lot of art from this period. I hope you all enjoy!
.
So today we have The Birth of Venus by Botticelli - This is one of my absolute favorites. It was painted between 1492-1496 and is located in the Uffizi in Florence and it is huge. It measures 67.9" x 109.6"! I was so impressed with the sheer size of this painting.
.
In this painting the classical goddess Venus emerges from the water on a shell, blown towards shore by the Zephyrs, symbols of spiritual passions. She is joined by one of the Horae, goddesses of the seasons, who hands her a flowered cloak.
The effect is distinctly pagan, considering it was made at a time and place when most artworks depicted Roman Catholic themes. It is somewhat surprising that this canvas escaped the flames of Savonarola's bonfires, where a number of Botticelli's other alleged pagan influenced works perished. Botticelli was very close to Lorenzo de' Medici. Because of their friendship and Lorenzo's power, this work was spared from Savonarola's fires.

And the Heat Goes On...

Martha Stewart

We are still enjoying our heat wave in the Northwest. And I want to clarify, that I am only able to "enjoy" our excessive heat because of Aunt Nicole letting us come over and play in their very large pool, for Uncle Doug & Aunt Cathlyn taking us out on their fabulous boat to watch the Blue Angels and swim in Lake Washington - and last but definitely not least - thanks to my Mom for letting us have a sleep over in her very cool air conditioned house! And today my car temp. was only at 100 degrees!

Heat Wave in the Northwest...

Martha Stewart

My car temp. was 109 degrees...melting. All I can think about is cold, refreshing iced tea! Honestly, anything cold. Be back tomorrow!

This Little Old Thing...

I had this old vase sitting in the back of my cabinet - I am pretty sure it has been there for years - and decided to give it a new look.

So I spray painted the vase black. And once dry, I traced the outline of a fleur-de-lis (the cutout I got at Michaels for .99). I then painted it white with my go-to white acrylic paint.

It was a bit too white, so I pulled out my trusty Miniwax Gel Stain

and gave it a great new look...and the best part, was I had everything already on-hand. It always amazes me what a little black spray paint and some stain can do!

From Cone to Ta Da...

What could you do with this you ask?

Add a few embellishments - you might just have a few laying around - and

...Ta Da! I added the paper and honestly I used double stick tape! Then I had a few "balls" left over from another project, so I glued one onto the bottom. I then stamped a fleur-de-lis on a piece of black paper, cut it out, added a few jewel embellishments and glued that bad boy on. Then added a few different types of ribbon and filled the top of the cone with the gold "filler". Here is a great way to use up a few odds and ends you have laying around!

Take a Look at Gayle's House...

My Mom and I had lunch at her good friend Gayle's house yesterday. It was a great lunch and I was able to take a few shots to show off her beautiful home located in Broadmoor in Seattle.
